The lens creates the image
Most of my digital photography is done with manual lenses manufactured during the second half of the twentieth century. There are several reasons for this choice. Many vintage lenses have character, something that is missing from current offerings. I can be certain that the images that I record are not manipulated by software in the lens and the camera, for as far as the camera knows, one is shooting without a lens. Also, I like to focus where I want, something that slows me down and makes me think about the photograph. Lastly, handling these jewels is a wonderful sensory experience, heightened when I open the files in a large monitor and stare in awe at what these products of vintage engineering, some based on designs dating back to the 1890’s, can deliver
