Sangre de Cristo Mountains

A few miles away from the realm of the juniper and pinyon pine, and two thousand feet higher up, the southern end of the Sangre de Cristo range is where the Rocky Mountains begin. Far from the barren landscape that those who have never visited often associate with New Mexico. But here too there is stress. There is but a thin veneer of snow in between the aspens, and few if any baby spruces.
